Summer Reading

SIGN UP at THE LIBRARY – You will get a reading record to keep track of the books you read and a bag of goodies including a certificate for a FREE CREEMEE at Seb’s Snackbar!

THEN WHAT? – There are three different age groups this summer, with three different grand prizes! For kids 5 and under fill out a grand prize form for every 5 books you read. For kids 6 to 12 fill out a grand prize form for every book your read. For kids 13 and up fill out a grand prize form for every 100 pages you read. 

THE GRAND PRIZE – A name will be drawn August 17th at the Summer Reading Party to win the GRAND PRIZE for each age group. Remember, the more you read and visit the library, the more likely you are to win!

All events are completely free and open to the public and last approximately 1 hour  (camps longer, as noted)

BACKPACK THEATER Saturday June 23, 1:00 pm –Theater brings their superb skill and energy to South Hero! Tap into your imagination and enjoy a true literary experience with their renditions of The Emperor’s Nightingale and  Beauty and the Beast. All Ages.

ORIGAMI ROCKS Thursday June 28, 10am – All welcome to join us as we explore origami that rocks in unexpected ways. We will make fun and easy models. Ages: 6 to Adult

SAWMILL STUDIOS July 9 through 13, 9:00 am to 10:30 am – Come join in the fun in this enrichment summer camp! In this program, campers will learn safe operation of woodworking hand tools, materials, and techniques. First time students will build a toolbox then join returning students building their choice of about 40 projects. All tools and materials are provided and no previous experience is necessary! Entering Grades 1 – 6, sign-up required and space is limited.

FOSSILS Thursday July 12, 10am – Explore the world of fossils! We’ll be making fossils to take home, creating fossil ID charts, fossil stamp books, and a hands-on fossil table for children to explore Vermont fossils and fossils from around the globe. All Ages.                                                                                                                                                 

BUILD A BETTER WORLD WITH MAGIC! with Tom Joyce Tuesday July 24, 10:00 am Tom Joyce is back for another year with one of his amazing magic shows! New books and new tricks, all in one exciting event! Always a crowd favorite! Ages 4 and up.

OWLS OF VERMONT with Southern Vermont Natural History Museum Wednesday July 25, 2pm – his birds of prey program focuses on the raptor night shift. The adaptations that make owls the supreme hunters of the night is the focus with an exploration into the various species that call the Northeast home.  We’ll bring live owls, touchable artifacts and interactive demonstrations to make this an unforgettable presentation. Ages 4 to adult.

LIGHTS! CAMERA ACTION! FILM CAMP July 30 – August 3, 9 am until 12 pm – Learn about the equipment used to create television programming and create a short program to air on Lake Champlain Access Television. All participants will be taught how to operate a camera, direct a television program and digitally edit their work. Each child will receive a DVD of all of the projects completed during the camp. Ages 10 +. Sign-up required.

ROCKING IT WITH PAN PIPES Thursday August 2, 10 am Join Mr. K of Exordium to make your own 3 tone panpipe from invasive Japanese Knotweed and learn how to tie the knots that will hold the tubes together. Participants will have a decorated instrument to take home that will produce notes and look like the native Inca instruments.

HENNA with Bess Perry Tuesday August 7, 10 am Learn all about the beautiful art of henna, get your own henna tattoo, and take home a henna cone of your own. Ages 4 and up. Sign-up required and space is limited.

END OF SUMMER READING PARTY Friday August 17, 10 am – Mike and the Big Blue Trunk is back for our end of summer reading party! Held outdoors weather permitting with ice cream, lemonade, and balloon animals for everyone! All Ages.
